I really became interested in photography when I was given a camera to use instead of always borrowing a mobile phone. I was already taking lots of snapshots because I loved being outdoors and photographing birds, wildlife and landscapes, but having my own camera gave me the chance to experiment and learn much more. I started trying different settings, compositions, angles and styles, and photography quickly became something I really enjoyed.

Through my photography, I hope I can encourage other people to appreciate nature and understand why protecting wildlife and their habitats is so important. Birds and other wildlife are constantly being affected by habitat loss and human activity, and I think photography can help people notice things they might otherwise walk straight past. I have also helped with several bird rescues and releases, and I hope my images can raise awareness about the challenges wildlife face, how some injuries can be prevented, and what we can all do to help.

One of the biggest highlights of my photography has been the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year. In 2024, my image Elegance won the Junior Category, and I have since been a Junior Finalist for three years in a row, with Powerful in 2025 and Percival’s Pearl in 2026. Having my wildlife photography recognised by Australian Geographic has been an amazing experience and has encouraged me to keep learning and improving.

I have also received a Highly Commended in the 2021 BirdLife Australia Photography Awards for Walking The Wire, a Commended in Australian Photography for Magpie In The Vines, and two Commended awards in the 2023 Mono Awards for Look To The Skies and Take A Closer Look.

 

I currently use a Canon EOS R7 with a Canon RF 100–400mm f/5.6–8 IS USM lens. My first camera was a Canon PowerShot 430, which I used to capture some of my favourite early photographs. I then moved to a Canon EOS 550D with a Tamron 16–300mm lens before eventually progressing to my current R7 and 100–400mm setup. I’ve also had the opportunity to borrow a Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens and a Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens.

 

For me, photography isn’t really about having the newest or most expensive camera — it’s about getting outside, being patient, learning about the wildlife around you and hopefully capturing a moment that makes somebody else care about it too.
